US actress Gabourey Sidibe has hit the headlines, thanks to a sex scene, which she filmed for hit show Empire.
The 32-year-old, who plays personal assistant Becky Williams, filmed the steamy session, which saw her character enjoy a passionate rooftop romp with rapper MC J Poppa (played by actor Mo McRae).
After the episode aired, social media was soon flooded with a series of memes that ridiculed the idea that a plus-size woman could be considered sexually desirable.
Sidibe, who found fame in the 2009 film Precious, has since hit back at critics saying that she was “proud” of her work:
“I, a plus sized, dark-skinned woman, had a love scene on primetime television,” she wrote in a blog post for Entertainment Weekly.
“I had the most fun ever filming that scene even though I was nervous,” she continued. “But I felt sexy and beautiful and I felt like I was doing a good job.”
Referencing the ‘fat-shaming’ memes, Sidibe added: “I’m very proud of the work we all did to make that scene a great opening for the episode. I keep hearing that people are ‘hating’ on it. I’m not sure how anyone could hate on love but that’s okay. You may have your memes.”
