Mad about manners: who made this statement?

Charismatic and fun-loving, he’s loved the world over. Often the centre of attention, he knows how to work a crowd with entertainment, but knows how to focus when it’s time to do what he does best.

Arguably his country’s current best-known export, he exudes confidence; isn’t shy when it comes to celebrating a victory; and boasts the ability to move with lightening speed.

It is of course the world’s fastest man, Jamaican sprinter Usain Bolt, who celebrates his 28th birthday today.

An impressive runner from his teenage years, Bolt won the 200m silver medal in the Jamaican high school championships when he was 15.

Before embarking on a career as a sprinter, it was cricket that had his heart, with the sportsman demonstrating his skill as a fast bowler. But once his cricket coach suggested to him that he should consider moving to track and field, a new career beckoned.

At the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, Bolt won three gold medals and broke an equal number of world records. He won the 100m and 200m in a record time of 9.69 seconds and 19.30 seconds respectively.

The following year at the World Championships, he bettered his 100m world-record, winning the event in a time of 9.58 seconds to win his first world championship gold medal. He also won the 200m in a new world-record time of 19.19 seconds, beating his own record by 0.11 seconds.

Thankfully, fame hasn’t caused him to lose his core values, as he proved when he recalled the importance of having manners growing up in Jamaica (below).
