Viola Davis on praying for a “big black man”

They say that dreams can come true, but for Viola Davis, it was her prayers that came to life.

The Beautiful Creatures actress, who celebrates her 49th birthday today, once revealed that she met her husband, fellow actor Julius Tennon just weeks after praying for a “big black man”.

“I was the loneliest woman in the world, and someone said, ‘You should just pray for a husband’,” Davis said in an interview with The New York Post.

“I said I wanted a big black man from the South who looked like a football player, who already had children, who maybe had been married before. Three and a half weeks later, I met my husband.”

The pair met whilst sharing a scene on the television show City of Angels. Recalling their meeting, Davis said: “He was the anesthesiologist, Dr. Holly, and I was Nurse Lannett. We were passing blood in a scene.

“He knew how lonely I was. I was out in L.A. and I hated it and he said, ‘I’ll show you around Los Angeles. I’ll show you around the Santa Monica pier.’”

Not only did they go on to marry in 2003, Davis’s desire for her future husband to have children also came true, as Tennon had two sons from a previous relationship. The couple also have a daughter, Genesis (pictured with Davis below), who they adopted as a newborn in 2011.
