US songstress Alicia Keys and producer Swizz Beatz celebrate their fourth wedding anniversary today (July 31) – and the singer used the occasion to announce via Twitter and Instagram that she and her husband are expecting their second child.
The Fallin’ hitmaker wrote: “Happy Anniversary to the love of my life @therealswizzz! And to make it even sweeter we’ve been blessed with another angel on the way! You make me happier than I have ever known! Here’s to many many more years of the best parts of life!”
Their continually blossoming marriage is perhaps all the more impressive, considering the controversy the couple sparked when they first began their relationship over four years ago.
The pair got together when the producer, real name Kasseem Dean, was still married to his now ex-wife, R&B singer Mashonda Tifrere (below), sparking a whirlwind of media controversy and earning Keys a barrage of abuse from those who felt she had ‘stolen’ another woman’s husband.
The situation wasn’t helped when Tifrere, who has a seven-year-old son with Dean, penned an open letter to Keys, writing: “If you are reading this Alicia, let me start by saying, you know what you did. You know the role you played and you know how you contributed to the ending of my marriage.”
Still, Keys and Dean wed in 2010, just a few months after the producer’s divorce from Tifrere and was finalised. And after months of maintaining her silence, Keys, who has a three-year-old son with Dean, eventually spoke out about the situation the following year.
She said: “We didn’t start seeing each other until months after they had separated. I was aware of all the false things that were being said about me, it definitely hurt.”
However, Keys went on to state that “things are really good now” and described her relationship with her husband as “intoxicating and whole.” And earlier this year, it appeared that all differences had indeed been put aside when Keys, Dean and Tifrere were all spotted on holiday together in St. Barts (below).
Now, the icing on the cake comes with the couple sharing the news that they’re expecting their second child. And with Keys making the announcement with an accompanying photo showing her husband cradling her baby bump while she smiles gleefully, it seems that their relationship is stronger than ever.
So what’s the verdict four years on? Is a relationship that blossoms amid such bitterness and controversy doomed to fail eventually? Or is Keys and Dean’s seemingly strong marriage proof that true love conquers all? Tell us what you think.
