At the 1968 Summer Olympics in Mexico City, US athlete Tommie Smith won gold in the 200 meters men’s finals.
During the podium ceremony, Smith and fellow athlete John Carlos, who won bronze, both wore a black glove and both raised their gloved hand in a fisted Black Power salute to silently protest against the racial injustice faced by their fellow black Americans back home.
The protest went on to become one of the most iconic moments in Olympic history. And according to Smith, it was his wife that sent him the famous gloves that he and Carlos wore…
Who knew it was Smith’s wife that sent him the famous gloves? Well, as the saying goes, ‘Behind every great man…’ A wonderful recollection of an iconic moment. Happy 70th birthday Tommie Smith.
